Compression measures how much a golf ball deforms when you strike it. Slower swings generally suit lower-compression balls (softer, easier to launch, often longer for them); faster swings can use higher-compression balls without losing distance and gain more control.
What compression actually is
When a clubface hits a golf ball, the ball squashes for a fraction of a second and springs back, launching off the face. Compression is a rough measure of how much it squashes: a low-compression ball deforms more and feels softer; a high-compression ball deforms less and feels firmer. Ratings are not perfectly standardized across brands, so treat them as a guide rather than a precise physics number — but the general relationship holds, and it is genuinely useful for choosing a ball.
Why it matters for your swing
The key idea is matching. To get the full spring-back — the energy return that becomes distance — you want to compress the ball meaningfully at impact. A slower swing does not deliver enough speed to fully compress a firm, high-compression ball, so it can feel hard and leave distance on the table. A lower-compression ball squashes more easily at that speed, which is why it often feels better and flies as far or farther for a slower swinger. A faster swing compresses almost anything, so a faster player can choose a firmer ball for control without a distance penalty.
A simple compression guide
