How we pick and score
Every claim we make about a product rests on this page. If we get this wrong, nothing else we publish is worth reading.
We do not run a testing lab. We don't have one, and we're not going to pretend we do. Everyone in golf gear implies they lab-tested twenty balls or robot-tested fifty drivers. We haven't tested any in a lab, and we say so. When a number in one of our reviews came from someone else's lab or robot, we say whose it was and we link to it. When we couldn't verify something, we say that too — in those words, on the page. Units we claim to have lab-tested: 0.
What we actually do instead
We research. Specifically, we work from:
- Published manufacturer specifications — treated as claims, not facts. We write "Titleist rates it soft" or "Cleveland lists it at", not "it does". The difference matters.
- Cost-per-round and value math.Price per dozen divided by the balls you lose a round; last year's driver at 60% of the price for single-digit yards of difference. This is arithmetic anyone can reproduce, and it's the heart of "spend where it matters".
- Independent third-party testing — outlets like MyGolfSpy who buy the gear and robot-test it properly. We cite them by nameand link them. Borrowing someone else's credibility with attribution is honest; implying their tests are ours is not.
- Aggregated owner reviews — treated as evidence, but weak evidence. A recurring complaint across thousands of buyers is a real signal about comfort or durability. It is not a substitute for a specification.
What our scores are, and what they are not
Every product carries metric scores out of 10, and an overall score that is simply their mean. These are judgments from documented research.They are not lab measurements, and we will never present them as such. We publish the rubric because nobody else in value golf does — if you can't see what a number is made of, the number is decoration.

- Stopping power on approach and wedge shots — the thing premium balls sell.

- Forgiveness
- How much the club helps on off-center strikes — the amateur's priority.
- Distance
- Ball speed and carry for the target player, not a tour pro.
- Build / feel
- Materials, sound and feedback for the money.
- Completeness / adjustability
- What the set includes, or how the club adapts to your swing.
- Value
- Performance per dollar at its LIVE price.
Bags, shoes and gloves
- Core function
- Storage and organization (bags), grip and stability (shoes), grip and durability (gloves).
- Comfort / portability
- Carry weight (bags), all-day comfort (shoes), fit (gloves).
- Build quality
- Materials and how long it lasts before it's replaced.
- Weather / conditions
- Waterproofing and grip in the wet, where it matters.
- Value
- Performance per dollar at its LIVE price.
Tech (rangefinders, GPS watches)
- Accuracy
- How reliably it returns the right yardage — the whole job.
- Ease of use
- Lock speed and glanceability under real on-course pressure.
- Slope / features
- The genuinely useful extras (slope, shot tracking) versus the markup ones.
- Range / battery
- How far it reaches, and how long it lasts between charges.
- Value
- Performance per dollar at its LIVE price.
Why a score can change without the product changing
The Value metric is computed against the product's liveprice. So when a ball or club drops in a sale, its Value score rises and its overall score moves with it — even though the product is identical. That is deliberate, and it is honest. "Is this worth the money?" is a question about the money, and the money changes weekly.
How the prices work
- Prices come from the Amazon Product Advertising API, refreshed on a daily schedule.
- Every price is stamped with the date we fetched it. The most recent refresh was Jul 23, 2026.
- If our price data is more than 48 hours old, the number disappears.The button falls back to "Check price on Amazon". We would rather show you nothing than a figure that has rotted.
- If a product has no buyable offer, we say so and show no price.
How we choose what to cover
- Real, currently-sold products only.Every product was resolved against Amazon's live catalog. We do not write up a product from memory.
- No product we could not research gets a score. No research, no number.
- Buyer-first, always.If the cheaper option is good enough, we say so — even when the expensive one pays us more. You'll find this throughout the site, and it is not an accident.
What we will never do
- Write "we tested", "hands-on", or "we measured" — because we didn't.
- Invent a price, a rating, a review count, or a specification.
- Publish a customer testimonial. We have no customers; we sell nothing.
- Claim a credential the author doesn't hold, or imply years of tenure. Our author is an enthusiast, and we say exactly that.
- Let a commission rate change a ranking.
Who writes this
Reviews and guides on Club & Carry are written and edited by Stephen V., an enthusiast who reads the manuals, compiles the specs and does the math — no lab coat, no sponsorships. The site is published by Type 5 Marketing LLC.
