The Best Golf Shorts for the Money

Golf apparel carries the biggest brand markup in the game. Here is what the fabric actually needs to do, and how cheaply you can get it.

We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings, and we say so when the cheaper product is the better buy. How this works.

The Amazon Essentials classic-fit short is the value winner — wicking fabric, a proper tee pocket and big-and-tall sizing at a price that lets you own four pairs. The Under Armour Matchplay is the cheapest genuine four-way stretch short here, and the Puma Jackpot 2.0 is a real tour brand at generic money.

Golf apparel is where the markup lives

Of everything in this hub, apparel has the loosest relationship between price and performance. A golf short is a piece of woven synthetic fabric with pockets. The engineering that separates a good one from a bad one — stretch content, a wicking finish, a waistband that does not roll — is cheap to manufacture and appears at surprisingly low price points. What you pay for above that is a logo and a color range.

That is not a reason to buy the worst thing available. It is a reason to know exactly which three or four specs matter, buy those, and stop. Here they are.

The four things that actually matter

  • Four-way stretch. This is the one you feel every swing. A golf swing rotates the hips and loads the lead leg; a rigid woven short fights that and restricts the turn. Look for elastane or spandex in the fabric composition, or the phrase "four-way stretch" explicitly. The Under Armour Matchplay is the cheapest genuine four-way stretch option on this page.
  • A moisture-wicking finish. Cotton holds sweat and gets heavy and cold. Polyester with a wicking treatment moves it to the surface where it evaporates. Every short here does this; anything without it is not a golf short regardless of what the label says.
  • The fifth pocket. A small pocket for tees and a ball marker is the detail that separates a golf short from a chino short. It sounds trivial until you spend a round digging tees out of a full front pocket.
  • Waistband behavior. A stretch waistband with a silicone gripper keeps a polo tucked without cinching a belt tight. Puma and adidas both build this in; it is a genuine comfort difference over four hours.

Inseam: 9 inches is the default for a reason

Golf shorts run from about 7 to 11 inches of inseam. Nine inches sits just above the knee on an average-height golfer, which clears the knee through the swing without riding up when you crouch to read a putt. Ten and a half suits taller golfers or anyone who dislikes showing knee; seven is a fashion length that will not pass some dress codes.

If you are ordering online and cannot try, take the 9-inch. It is the safest number and the one most brands cut best.

The dress code question

Most private clubs and many public courses require a collared shirt and tailored shorts, and specifically prohibit cargo pockets, denim and athletic shorts. Every short on this page reads as tailored and will pass, which is worth stating plainly because the cheapest option being "Amazon Essentials" makes people nervous about walking into a clubhouse. Nobody on the first tee can identify the brand of your shorts. That is the entire point of this page.

Buy quantity before you buy quality

Here is the value argument in one line: four cheap pairs beat one good pair for a golfer who plays weekly. Laundry cycles, not fabric technology, are what determine whether you have clean golf clothes on Saturday. Build the rotation with the Amazon Essentials or the discounted Puma first, then add an adidas Ultimate365 as the pair you wear when it matters. Do it the other way around and you own one very nice pair of shorts and three pairs of gym shorts.

The same logic runs through best golf polos, and the whole first-kit version of it is in what to wear for golf.

Pros

  • The cheapest way to own three or four pairs of proper golf shorts instead of one
  • Includes the fifth pocket for tees and markers that most cheap shorts leave off
  • Big and tall sizing, which value brands usually skip entirely

Cons

  • Woven polyester with limited stretch compared with the performance brands
  • Color range and finish look plain next to a Puma or adidas short

Don't buy this if…

you want four-way stretch. This is a classic woven short — the Under Armour Matchplay is the cheapest genuinely stretchy option here.

Pros

  • Puma's stretch waistband with a silicone gripper keeps a shirt tucked without a tight belt
  • DryCELL wicking is a proper performance fabric, not a marketing word on a cotton short
  • Reinforced pocket bags Puma calls tee-proof — the pocket that usually fails first

Cons

  • Past-season colors and sizes sell out unpredictably
  • Fit runs slim through the seat compared with a classic-fit short

Don't buy this if…

you need one specific color or a full size run. Past-season stock is what makes this cheap and also what makes it patchy.

Pros

  • Four-way stretch is the single upgrade you feel most in a golf short, and this is the cheapest way to get it
  • Dries quickly after a wet start or a sweaty back nine
  • Tapered leg sits better than the boxy cut on most value shorts

Cons

  • Tapered fit is not for everyone — heavier legs may prefer the classic Amazon Essentials cut
  • Only four pockets; no dedicated tee pocket

Don't buy this if…

you want a roomy traditional short. Tapered means tapered, and no amount of stretch fixes a cut you do not like.

How we picked

We do not run a testing lab

We compiled the published specifications, did the cost-per-round and value math, and read the independent robot and launch-monitor data — then scored each product against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — they are notmeasurements we took, because we do not have a lab and we are not going to pretend we do. Where a number came from someone else's lab, we name them and link them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

What are the best golf shorts for the money?
The Amazon Essentials classic-fit short — wicking fabric, a tee pocket and big-and-tall sizing at a price that lets you own several pairs. The Under Armour Matchplay is the cheapest four-way stretch option.
What inseam should golf shorts be?
Nine inches is the default and suits most golfers — it clears the knee through the swing without riding up when you crouch. Taller golfers often prefer 10 to 10.5 inches.
Are expensive golf shorts worth it?
Rarely. The specs that matter — four-way stretch, a wicking finish, a tee pocket and a good waistband — appear at low price points. Above that you are mostly paying for the logo and the color range.
Can I wear regular shorts to play golf?
Most courses with a dress code require tailored shorts and prohibit cargo pockets, denim and athletic shorts. A plain flat-front golf short passes anywhere, whatever it cost.
